Featured Author Thursday: Melissa Keir

Hi All!

My favorite day of the week as I get to share another great author with you all. This week, I’ll be sharing Melissa Keir and her latest work, Protecting His Wolfe. Enjoy!

Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Her love of booauthor picks was instilled by her mother and grandparents who were avid readers. She’d often sneak books away from them so that she could fantasize about those strong alpha males and plucky heroines. In middle school and high school, Melissa used to write sappy love poems and shared them with her friends and still has those poems today! In college, her writing changed to sarcastic musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won awards for her writing and books. You can find many of these musings along with her latest releases on her website and blog.

As a writer, Melissa likes to keep current on topics of interest in the world of writing. She’s a member of the Romance Writers of America, Mid-Michigan RWA Chapter, and EPIC. She is always interested in improving her writing through classes and seminars.

Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, owner of a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.

And now a bit about Protecting His WolfeCheck out this lovely cover:

Protecting His Wolfe LRG

Betsie Wolfe is a small-town girl who leaves her cozy little life for a job in the big city, never expecting to become a witness to a murder or face vicious threats.

Detective Jonah Pigg is attracted to Betsie’s green eyes and small frame when he arrives on the scene of the murder.

When the threats begin, he takes her into his home under the protection of the three Piggs who own the Pigg Detective Agency. It will take all his detective work to keep her safe from the killer.

Passion has a way of igniting when people are under stressful situations, and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other’s arms. But is their relationship a matter of desire, or is it something more?

Late one October evening, after most of the staff had left, Betsie chose to get the last of the filing done before heading out, hoping to earn some bonus points from Miss Hildebrand, the imperious clerical supervisor at Anderson. After all, nobody waited at home for her.

She kicked off her shoes and wiggled her toes, glad to be free of the fashionable toe-pinchers after a long day. Grabbing the stack of papers, she walked over to the tall filing cabinet. She sniffed and sneezed. “Julie must have worn the whole bottle of Chanel this morning.” Her co-worker’s “more is better” perfume policy made their close quarters trying at times. Juggling the folders in one arm, she pushed the window open for fresh air then sat on the floor to sort the files. Perhaps Mrs. Hildebrand, the old dragon who ran the secretarial pool, would appreciate her efficiency and lay off her for once.

Few, if any, other staff members remained so late in the day. Only the soft hum of the fluorescent lights broke the quiet, and she was able to work quickly without all the interruptions of the business day.

As she finished alphabetizing A-L, harsh voices echoed from outside, startling her.

Who could that be? She crept closer to the window, but found it too high to see the people below. Perhaps she shouldn’t have stayed alone at night, no matter how it might benefit her career.

“Do you have the stuff?” The voice sounded familiar. She scrunched her eyes, trying to envision the person behind the sound.

“Yes, I do, but the drugs are hidden until you pay me twice the amount we agreed on.”

She held her breath and crouched behind the file cabinet, afraid to make a sound. Is that Mr. Anderson? Why is my boss talking about drugs?

“That’s not the way to do business. We agreed on a fee. I did the loading and driving. I had all the risk.” The rough voice took on a menacing tone with a rasp that sounded like he—and it was clearly a man— had smoked three packs of cigarettes a day for twenty years.

“But it’s my company and my name on those trucks, which means I’m taking the biggest risk if we get caught moving your drugs. So the amount is double.”

Betsie’s heart raced. She’d never known anyone who’d been involved in dirty business, and now she was working for one. I wish I hadn’t worked late. Her leg hurt from her cramped posture, and she rubbed her calf to try to ease the pain. Closing her eyes, she retraced in her mind the office layout and an escape route. Just in case.

Irish Dreams: An Excerpt

Hi All,

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend. Since I had up a cover reveal this weekend, I missed my Sunday Snippet so I thought I’d share an excerpt with you all today from Irish Dreams. In this scene, Maggie is watching Ethan from a distance, wanting what she feels she can’t have and making assumptions about what she doesn’t know. We are all guilty of doing this more often than not, and it often is what causes problems in otherwise smooth situations. Enjoy!

Maggie forced her lips upward even as she let her gaze drift. As luck would have it, Rick picked the exact same restaurant in which Ethan and the brunette from the other day–whom she assumed to be his wife–dined. The pair sat at a table diagonal from them, tucked into an intimate corner of the dining room. Maggie’s stomach tightened as Ethan laughed at something his wife said. He appeared the indulgent, happy husband. Make that gorgeous husband, as his eyes seemed to shine brighter this night. Either way, he looked happy and that left her feeling strangely bittersweet. Would a man ever be that happy with her? Given the size of the nearby towns, she shouldn’t have been surprised to see them. Still, it did seem a cruel twist of fate.

“Would you two like a bottle of wine with your dinner?” A waiter approached their table.

“Yes, Chianti would be nice,” said Rick. “You’d like that, darling, wouldn’t you? Bring it.”

As usual, he hadn’t waited for her to answer. Dressed in a navy blazer, a crisp white shirt, khakis and a pale yellow sweater vest, Rick looked the part of the distinguished gentleman. How deceiving. She only now admitted she’d rarely seen him wear the same outfit more than once in all the years she’d known him. He’d always had a passion for clothes but looking back, it was more than that. He was a professor, not an editor for Vogue. Quite simply, he was a handsome,
vain man.

The waiter watched her. “A glass for you, miss?”

“Of course a glass. You don’t expect her to drink directly from the bottle, do you?” Rick rolled his eyes in exaggeration. “Now get on with it.”

The waiter left with a nod.

“Idiot. You don’t deal with this stupidity back home.”

Was he kidding? How come she’d never noticed Rick’s selfishness before? Perhaps for the same reason she’d chosen to ignore all his other flaws, she’d pushed it aside. Four years with him and he still didn’t acknowledge she loved Riesling. She’d always preferred sweeter white wines.

The gorgeous brunette sitting with Ethan gave a light laugh and threw her head back. The back of her dress dipped down in a revealing display of flawless skin. A tailored cut that hugged an enviable waist. She lifted a glass of champagne for a toast. “Cheers to freedom.”

Freedom? What did she mean?

Ethan sipped his champagne with a smile which didn’t quite reach the breadth of his face. Or maybe Maggie’d imagined it. He looked up and caught her watching. His eyes were intense emerald pools as he studied her.

She rubbed her arms, warding off a chill. Despite her sweater and long skirt, she might as well have been nude before him.

“Your friend from the other night?” Rick asked.

“Ethan is the best man at Elsie’s wedding.”

“And the woman? She’s a looker.”

“I assume she’s his wife.”

Featured Author Thursday: TF Walsh

Hi TF! Great to have you here today! What can you tell our readers about yourself and your paranormal romance?

I grew up listening to bedtime Romanian stories that could only be compared to the TF Walsh PicBrothers Grimm tales, and ever since then folklore and mythology has fascinated me. These influences have trickled into my stories, and in particular Cloaked in Fur, which is based in Transylvania—a place seeping with legends. Now, when it comes to love, I’m a sucker for stories about two people from different worlds falling madly in love and fighting against the odds to stay together. This is the story I wanted to tell in Cloaked in Fur, showing how far someone was willing to go to hold onto true love.

And no one ever said the fight for love was going to be easy.

Today I’m sharing a teaser from Cloaked in Fur:

My emotions tore between apologizing and confessing everything, yet all I managed to

do was stare at his bare torso.

“Your institute has been issued passes to travel into the woods, and Vasile has yours. I

can give you a lift there.” Connell cleared his throat and took my cup to the sink.

“You’re awfully quiet.”

Heat exploded across my skin, and I climbed to my feet. “My mind is a swirl of

thoughts, but I can’t pin any of it down. I’m devastated that my neighbor is dead, the

police suspect me, and even worse, I feel you slipping away from me. So, what am I

supposed to say?”

Instead of collecting me into his embrace and kissing me, Connell stood there like one

of those God statues in museums that wore almost nothing, but were sculptured to

perfection. I wanted to forget everything the day was about to bring and beg Connell to

make love to me until I passed out.

What would you do for love?

Sunday Snippet: May I Have This Dance?

Check out a fight scene from a old work that I’ve now decided to rework. This is near where this novella starts where Gemma (our heroine) sees Sebastian (our main man or hero if you prefer). Enjoy!

Up ahead, three males surrounded Sebastian and another male. This wouldn’t usually concern Gemma but the red streak across Sebastian’s shirt did. “Is that blood on Sebastian?”

Carlyn frowned. “I don’t see him as the fighting type.”

“Not usually,” Sara said.

Yet it became quite obvious Sebastian and the largest of the males were not on friendly terms. Gemma balled her hands into fists as Carlyn stopped the car. Every muscle in her tensed as the dark-haired male rushed Sebastian. Their bodies connected, but Sebastian twisted, pushing him into the bushes.

Pulled by instinct, fear or plain insanity, Gemma couldn’t open the passenger side of the car fast enough. She ran toward the fight. Three other men stood watching as Sebastian and his attacker wrestled between punches. Sebastian’s dominance soothed her nerves. He ducked his attacker’s fist and landed a hook to the side of the man’s face.

As she neared, Sebastian’s gaze registered surprise. Her chest fluttered for an instant, then clenched as his attacker’s fist connected with his face, knocking him off balance.

“No.” Gemma fell to the ground beside him.

A thick arm wrapped around her neck, hoisting her up and away before she could touch him. She stumbled, losing her footing as she clawed away the pressure preventing her from breathing

“Take your hands off her or I will rip you to shreds.” Sebastian stood in front of her, chest heaving, eyes burning with fury.

Featured Author Thursday: Andrea Cooper

Hi Andrea! Great to have you here today! What can you tell our readers about yourself and your latest release, Sons of Dragons? What a beautiful cover by the way!

Son of Dragons

Book 2 Legends of Oblivion series

In a time of false peace, the dead rise as soldiers for the Warloc’s scheme. For thousands of years he has stood ready for the final battle. Though the witch and her cursed Elvin have destroyed his physical body, now with his protégé, he has honed a new way to wage war.

Shunned by her own people and weary-hearted from centuries of lost loves, Elvin warrior Mirhana scours the land to silence the undead. Her heart has turned as cold as the sword she wields, until a prince seeks her aid.

Never has Prince Landon met a woman like Mirhana. Both beautiful and deadly, she haunts his dreams. The battle at hand becomes more enchanting than fighting to remain true to his unseen betrothed.

When a traitor emerges, new alliances are tested and the only remaining hope is to follow the prophecy and find the … Son of Dragons.

Clean from the bath, Landon let the air from the open window dry his hair. Dressed only in trousers, he leaned against the windowsill.

He thought he smelled the hint of roses and heat on the breeze. Movement from the street below caught his eye. He leaned out, squinting into the night.

Torches lined the cobbled street corners. A cloaked figure waited. Then the innkeeper rushed outside. His hands flew in gestures as the figure nodded.

Then he pointed to the window where Landon watched. At the same instant, the cloaked figure followed his finger’s path to Landon. Green eyes that seemed to glow met his.

Landon jumped up and cursed when his head hit the bottom of the window. When he looked back, both figures were gone.

Thinking the innkeeper would send guards, he waited with his sword in hand and his stare riveted on the door. No one came. He must be getting paranoid, thinking there was a ghost or enemy around every corner. His eyelids grew heavy as he waited for a fight that failed to materialize. Finally, he rolled his shoulders back to ease out the tension.

Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about those piercing emerald eyes. They’d belonged to a woman; he could tell. There was intelligence and

cunning in them. Her stare felt as though she saw through the façade he often wore as prince and to please others, and into his kajh.

A woman who was not afraid, but used to being feared. It unnerved him, yet excited him. His pulse quickened and his loins tightened at the thought of those eyes filled with passion for him.

Better get some sleep before the night was gone. Tomorrow, he’d tell Gillespie about what he saw. He doubted he could explain those captivating green eyes that continued to haunt him even now.

Andrea’s Bio: Growing up in Houston, Texas, Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Andrea writes paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba.

She believes in the power of change and counting each moment as a blessing. But most importantly, she believes in love.

Featured Author Thursday: Nikki Lynn Barrett

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome wonderful author, Nikki Lynn Barrett!4437_1090856669700_2534921_n

Nikki Lynn Barrett lives in Arizona with her husband and son. She’s an avid reader, a dreamer, and loves everything about books. She runs a book blog, an online used bookstore, and writes various genres of romance. Nikki can also be found outside with her camera when a storm is near, snapping photo after photo. Her dreams of becoming a writer started when she was young, when she started writing books in one subject notebooks by the fifth grade.

Nikki’s latest book, A Masterpiece of Our Love is now available (see buy links below!) and Becca, our heroine is here to tell us a little bit about this book and her version of a hero:

Hi everyone! I convinced my author, Nikki Lynn Barrett, to let me do the talking today. I, um..I’m not the best at these speech things, but I figured I’d give it a shot.

Some of you might or might not have heard my story. I was just eight when my family was taken from me, victims of a plane crash. I couldn’t tell you how or why a little thing like me made it through and they didn’t. It’s something I don’t understand to this day. I spent five days alone on a tiny island off the coast of Maine with Hunter until we were found. He was only twelve, but Hunter saved me. He cared for me and made sure I was safe, even when a lot of things were happening. I stopped talking…I guess it was the brain trauma, but Hunter was always there.

Sometimes, a bond forms with someone you least expect. That’s the kind of bond Hunter and I have. Some disagree with it, they think we should stay away from each other so we can move on, but you can’t erase a bond like that. And you can’t just forget what happened.

To this day, Hunter’s been the one to always give me that final push. I struggled. I wanted to be normal, and he was the only one who accepted that and helped me strive for it. He doesn’t consider himself a hero, but he is and always will be my hero.

A lot of things have happened in the duration of our story. I won’t give things away, but there were some major changes. Our bond grew stronger, but now it’s being tested. We learned some things that neither of us can remember from before.

Life is a story. It’s a challenge. I’m glad my author wrote a story for Hunter and I, and we’ll continue on for two more books. I hope you’ll give A Masterpiece Of Our Love a chance.

 Thanks for reading!

– Becca

Two Lives Torn by tragedy.
Eight-year-old Becca and twelve-year-old Hunter cling to each other and life after surviving a plane crash which stole their families.
Two Souls Seeking Love.
Each year, from the time she was old enough to travel on her own, Becca met up with Hunter on the island that altered their lives forever.
Until he stopped showing.
Her constant. Her link to the past. Gone in the blink of an eye.
Two Lives Bound by Secret.
Suffering more heartbreak, Hunter returns to the one place he’s always sought comfort, the island where he and Becca met. It was the place that stole from him, and in the same instance gave to him. He hasn’t been back or spoken to Becca in four years.
Though he’s sure she must hate him for disappearing, Hunter discovers the girl gone, now a woman in her place. Hunter is determined to prove to Becca he isn’t the same twelve-year-old boy of yesteryear.
But someone isn’t happy about their reunion…
Strange things begin happening. Letters start showing up in their hotel rooms and at home with cryptic messages.
Two Broken Hearts Heal as One.
With the mystery unsolved, Hunter convinces Becca to spend the remainder of the summer back home with him, both for safety and to give them a chance to discover the adults they’ve now become.
Will love get a chance to blossom, or will the past come back and tear the masterpiece of their love apart once and for all?
Before she turned to walk back into her room, Becca nodded. Her nostrils flared. Despite the fact that she did that out of anger, Hunter found it kind of cute. At that thought, he stopped cold. What was with him? He stole one last glance in the direction Vince had gone before moving into Becca’s room. In the corner by the window, he spotted her easel and the unfinished painting sitting there. Just as he thought, she’d begun to capture this morning’s scene.

“It’s going to be perfect.” He pointed and smiled.
“I’ll have to finish it later.” Becca perched at the edge of the bed. She heaved a sigh. “I’m so irritated! But I’m also bothered. Vince went to my apartment and found a letter which he thought was okay to open. That in itself makes me mad, but the letter- what it said…”
Hunter flew to her side and sat next to her, his instincts on high alert. “What did it say? Can I see it?”
“I’d let you see it if I were smart enough to ask Vince to give it to me.” She shook her head. “It said ‘You left me to die’.”
“What the hell?” Hunter shouted, startling Becca. He reached for her. “Sorry, I didn’t meant to scare you. With the letters we both found earlier … do you think they’re connected?” Why hadn’t he gotten one at home? Or maybe he did and no one had noticed yet. Not that he wanted to get one, but if Becca did, he figured it was only a matter of time before Shara or someone else told him about a letter.
The only thing that connected both of them like this was the crash. But why after twenty years would they start getting letters? Twenty years! This made no sense.
“I can’t imagine them not being connected,” Becca said quietly. Her body trembled slightly. “I just don’t get it. Why now?”
Thunder rumbled outside. Another storm was coming. Hunter wrapped her in his arms and rested his chin on the top of her head. She smelled so sweet. Whatever shampoo she used, he liked it. “I imagine this has to do with the plane crash. I just don’t know why it would come up now, either. And what the letters say doesn’t make sense to me.” You left me to die? That sounded as if there had been someone else on board. But no one else had made it! They’d been the only survivors!
Hadn’t they?
Hunter did not like second guessing himself. Sure, he’d been young, but wouldn’t he have remembered another survivor? It made him sick to think of the possibility that he could have saved another person and hadn’t. “How much do you remember about that night, Bec?”
“I don’t have many memories after the crash, other than you finding me and pulling me to land.” Becca ran a hand through her hair, eyes narrowed.

She looked at Brody, saw something haunted in his eyes and the reality of what happened sank in fully. She had almost plunged to her death. Just like her aunt. In her quest, she had brought Brody’s worst fear to light and made him relive that horrible incident. His chest rose and
fell heavily, his fists clenched at his sides.

In effort to reassure him, she reached out a hand. But he didn’t take it. He was frozen in place. In the past.
“Brody,” she said softly. “I’m fine. See?” She held out her shaking hands to show him.
“You saved me.”
Her breath hitched when he suddenly pulled her into his arms. The belay system prevented full body contact. Heat from his body radiated into hers as he lowered his head and claimed her lips. Consumed, possessed. All of what he couldn’t say was in that kiss and she understood fully how much she scared him.

His hands moved frantically down her spine to cup her hips and pull her against him. When the equipment got in the way, he tore his mouth from hers and growled. His eyes blazed down into hers. Still stunned from his kiss, she stared back, unable to speak.

“Tell me to stop,” he demanded, chest heaving beneath his soaked T-shirt as rain sluiced over rock hard muscle.

The Writer Inside

I was combing through pictures on the web this weekend and couldn’t help but be inspired by the beauty in nature. People ask me all the time where I get inspiration for books or how I come up with ideas. I just look around me and scenes start to unfold. It could be something as incredible as the early sun rays over hills:

Or it could be this amazing rocky sunset landscape:

Or it could be a city skyline:

Or it could be the simple acts of people around us, good or bad that just leave an impression and create a story in my mind. I’m not sure if it works the same way for all writers but I imagine there has to be similarities. And although it can surely drive one nuts when your mind is always dreaming up potential stories, it is tons of fun to see where the mind can take us. Even for those of you who don’t write, you may spend time reading or watching movies where you are inspired and your own dreams and stories start to form. Let yourself be open to the experience next time it occurs, don’t quash it and you may just find the writer inside you.

Have a great rest of your week!
